What is NIE?

NIE stands for Newspaper in Education – the name of an educational partnership between the newspaper industry and schools. NIE programs have existed and flourished in the United States for the past seven decades; today, more than 950 NIE programs deliver newspapers and educational programs to nearly 40 percent of all public school students in the United States.

Newspapers offer students and teachers fresh resources, every day. They help connect students to their neighborhoods and communities and the world beyond. The use of newspapers in the classroom helps prepare students for active citizenship and teaches real-life skills – how to look for a job, spend money wisely, and take advantage of community resources and activities, for instance. Studies even show that newspaper use in the classroom contributes to improved test scores! A 2002 NAA (Newspaper Association of America) study revealed that students in schools with at least some NIE programming did an average of 10 percent better on standardized tests than students in schools with no NIE programs.

Wheeling Newspapers, Inc., offers NIE programming to any school or qualified K-12 educational program (i.e., homeschool program) within our newspaper delivery area. Thanks in part to the generosity of corporate and private sponsors and our readers, area teachers receive classroom papers free of charge. Our NIE program offers resources for teachers, too: lesson plans and curriculum, teacher workshops and newsletters, classroom presentations, and more.
