For the past seventy years, the use of newspapers in American classrooms has flourished. Nearly 40% of all public school students in the U.S. are served by NIE (Newspaper in Education) programs or resources. Why?

Because newspapers are “living textbooks,” bringing fresh news and resources into classrooms each morning. Newspapers can be used in traditional subject areas – but also, to help teach character education and about community service and current events. Studies show that classroom newspaper use even improves standardized test scores.
